Press Release: Oyo Governor’s Wife hosts children to mark International Day of African Child

Oyo State Governor’s wife, Engr. (Mrs.) Tamunominini Makinde has urged children to shun every act of indiscipline and be upright in their studies, as she hosted the 2021 Children's Day celebration and International Day of the African Child at her Office, Government House Road, Ibadan.
Over 150 secondary schools students drawn from all parts of the state, representing no fewer than 10 schools attended the party.
Dignitaries that graced the occasion were the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Olubamiwo Adeosun, the Head of Service, Alhaja Ololade Agboola, the Director-General Due Process, Ms. Tara Adefowope among others.
According to the Wife of the Governor, children are the leaders of tomorrow, therefore Oyo State Government is investing so much in their future. She noted that the State Government has ensured public education is made free within the state and textbooks distributed free to children in the State. Mrs. Makinde also stressed that the present administration has placed a high priority on human capital development with children as a major focus and it's not leaving any stone unturned in investing huge resources in education and the overall welfare of the children in the State. "For instance, the child rights act law has been domesticated in Oyo State and this right is already being implemented to ensure that our children have access to quality and free education, social amenities, and justice wherever their right is violated" she mentioned. Mrs. Makinde said the policy of free and quality education put in place for all school children has been yielding a positive result and out-of-school children in the State have been reduced by 50%. Mrs. Makinde, therefore, urged the children to grab the opportunity at hand and ensure they study hard to meet up with their dreams. "I urge you, children, not to play with the opportunity you have to have a better tomorrow because education is essential and should be your priority", she said. She also reminded parents and teachers to continually be good examples for the children, as they are mentors, whom the children look up to. "They see you as role models because you have great influences on them both at home and school. Therefore, let us nurture the children in the right way to become what they are destined to be". "There is a saying that, children are the leaders of tomorrow, a society that neglects the children is trading off the future of his society," she said. In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of women affairs and social inclusion, Mrs. Christiana Abioye said the two days being celebrated are significant to the Wife of Oyo State Governor. She said Mrs. Makinde hosts the event annually to ensure that parents and teachers collaborate to ensure the right of our children to survival, development, participation is further enhanced in the society. In her remarks, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Alhaja Aminat Atere, charged everyone to educate and mentor their children but not abuse them. She stressed that parents and teachers should not abuse children under their care either physically, sexually, or otherwise.
At this year's children's day celebration, not fewer than ten different schools participated including Methodist Grammar School, Bodija Ibadan; Oladipo Alayande School of Science, Oke-Bola, Ibadan; Bishop Phillips Academy, Iwo-Road, Ibadan; Ibadan Grammar School, Molete, Ibadan; Anwarul-Islam Grammar School, Eleyele, Ibadan; Queen of Apostles, Oluyoro, Ibadan; Orogun Grammar School, Orogun, Ibadan; Methodist High School, Express, Ibadan; St. Micheal African Church Grammar School, Owode, Ibadan; and T.L. Oyesina Model Comprehensive High School, Monatan, Ibadan. Part of the highlights was talking on "Education and Mentor, not abuse, to secure the future of the African Child" a playlet, and the distribution of gifts to everyone who participated at the event.
