"FG Is Taxing Nigerians into Poverty!" – NLC President Ajaero Blasts Government Policies

NLC President Joe Ajaero Condemns Excessive Taxation and Rising Electricity Tariffs in Nigeria

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has voiced strong opposition to the federal government's economic policies, highlighting the detrimental effects of multiple taxation and escalating electricity tariffs on Nigerian workers and citizens.

Criticism of Tax Policies

Ajaero has criticized the government's imposition of multiple taxes, describing it as a betrayal of the social contract between the government and the people. He emphasized that these tax policies disproportionately affect ordinary Nigerians, exacerbating economic hardships and undermining their well-being.

Impact of Rising Electricity Tariffs

In addition to taxation concerns, Ajaero has expressed alarm over the continuous increase in electricity tariffs. He stated that the combination of high taxes and rising utility costs is placing an unbearable burden on workers, making daily survival increasingly challenging.

Government's Response and Tensions

The NLC's opposition to these economic measures has led to heightened tensions with the government. In September 2024, Ajaero was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while en route to an official engagement in the United Kingdom. This incident sparked widespread condemnation from various organizations, including Amnesty International, which labeled the arrest as an escalation of impunity.

Call for Policy Reassessment

Ajaero continues to urge the federal government to reconsider its economic policies, advocating for a more balanced approach that prioritizes the welfare of Nigerian citizens over corporate interests. The NLC remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting workers' rights and ensuring that government actions do not further impoverish the populace.

This ongoing discourse underscores the critical need for policies that foster economic growth while safeguarding the livelihoods of all Nigerians.
