Riches, a retired bank manager from Poole, Dorset, was known for his extensive charitable work, particularly with the Catholic organization Cafod. He had been visiting Kenya to see relatives and had previously contributed to building a school in the country.
Eyewitnesses reported that Riches was crossing the road, possibly heading to a nearby mosque for prayers, when he was struck by the speeding motorcade. The vehicle involved did not stop after the incident.
The driver of the government vehicle was arrested and later released on bail. Kenyan authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are urging witnesses to come forward.
The Foreign Office is providing support to Riches' family during this difficult time.
Kenya has a high number of road fatalities annually, with over 3,000 deaths each year attributed to poor road conditions, speeding, and reckless driving. The government has pledged to improve road safety measures to prevent such tragedies.
