Veteran Nigerian rapper, Michael Stephens, popularly known as Ruggedman, has opened up about his decision to remain unmarried and childless at the age of 51.
In a candid interview on TVC’s Your View Pidgin, the legendary Baraje crooner revealed that he made a personal vow in his younger years never to have a child outside wedlock—a promise he has stayed true to despite societal expectations.
“I Vowed Never to Have a Child Out of Wedlock”
Ruggedman, known for his pioneering role in Nigeria’s hip-hop scene, admitted that he is currently not in a relationship, not married, and does not have children. He explained that his decision was based on strong personal values he set for himself early in life.
> “When I was much younger, I vowed never to have a child out of wedlock. At times, I ask myself if my decision was right or wrong, but I believe parenthood is a huge responsibility. It’s something that should only happen with someone I truly love and want to build a future with.”
Did Fame and Entertainment Shape His Choices?
Reflecting on his journey in the entertainment industry, Ruggedman suggested that his career might have played a role in his personal life decisions. He admitted that his focus on music and fame during his early years left little room for serious relationships.
> “I blame entertainment a little because when we came into the industry, we didn’t know much—our focus was just on entertainment. Even a friend of mine once said in pidgin, ‘Make person never go use him wife take do girlfriend.’ At the time, my attention was completely on my career. I met people I wasn’t sure were ready, and I met people who liked me, but not necessarily because I was in love with them.”
A Life of Purpose Over Societal Pressure
Despite being one of the most respected names in Nigerian hip-hop, Ruggedman has chosen a different path from many of his peers who embraced marriage and parenthood early. He remains firm in his belief that these life decisions should not be rushed or influenced by external pressure.
His story is a powerful reminder that everyone’s journey is unique, and the right time for marriage and children varies for each individual. For Ruggedman, it’s not about age or societal expectations—it’s about finding the right person and making the right decision.
