Terror on Ohoror-Bomadi Road: Niger Delta Activist Austin Ozobo Survives Deadly Attack by Suspected Herdsmen

In a harrowing incident that underscores the escalating security challenges in Delta State, Nigeria, Comrade Austin Ozobo, a prominent Niger Delta human rights activist and National President of the Ijaw People's Development Initiative (IPDI), along with his associates, was attacked by suspected herdsmen on February 22, 2025. The assault occurred along the Ohoror/Bomadi road, a notorious hotspot for such violent encounters.

Details of the Attack

Comrade Ozobo recounted that their vehicle broke down around 6 p.m., approximately a kilometer before Agadama on the Ohoror road, as they were returning from a burial ceremony in Torugbene. While awaiting repairs, they were ambushed by armed individuals wielding AK-47 and AK-49 rifles. The assailants accused them of being internet fraudsters, colloquially known as "Yahoo Boys," and demanded their belongings. The ordeal lasted about an hour, during which the attackers confiscated phones and money, and attempted to force the victims into the nearby forest—a move that was ultimately abandoned.

Escalating Insecurity in the Region

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of violent activities attributed to herdsmen in the area. Prior to this attack, a man identified as Febogha was reportedly killed near the same location. Subsequently, two residents of Uwheru Community were also slain, prompting mass evacuations and heightened fear among locals. Communities such as Agadama have been severely affected, with residents abandoning their homes due to the relentless assaults.

Calls for Government Intervention

The Ijaw Publishers Forum (IPF) has vehemently condemned the attack on Comrade Ozobo and others, urging Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to address the persistent herdsmen attacks along the Bomadi-Ohoro road. The IPF highlighted the alarming rates of kidnappings, robberies, and killings, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect citizens and restore normalcy to the affected communities.

Government's Response

As of now, there has been no official statement from Governor Oborevwori regarding the incident. The lack of response has drawn criticism from various quarters, with stakeholders demanding immediate action to bolster security and safeguard the lives and properties of Delta State residents.

Conclusion

The attack on Comrade Austin Ozobo and the escalating violence in Delta State highlight a critical need for comprehensive security strategies and proactive governance. Addressing these challenges is imperative to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in the region.
