Terror on the Tracks: Pakistan Train Hijacked by Militants, 155 Rescued as Hostage Crisis Continues

In a harrowing incident on March 11, 2025, the Jaffar Express, traveling from Quetta to Peshawar, was hijacked by militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) in Pakistan's Balochistan province. The attackers sabotaged the railway track, causing the train to halt within a tunnel, and subsequently opened fire, resulting in casualties among passengers and crew.

Rescue Operations and Casualties

Pakistani security forces launched an immediate response, successfully rescuing 155 passengers. However, dozens remain captive as the operation continues. The BLA claims to hold 214 hostages, including alleged military personnel, and has threatened to execute them unless Baloch political prisoners are released within 48 hours. The rescue efforts have been particularly challenging due to militants equipped with suicide vests positioning themselves close to hostages, complicating direct intervention.

Eyewitness Accounts

Survivors have recounted the chaos and terror during the attack. Muhammad Ashraf, a passenger, described how people were attacked, with several injured and some fatalities occurring during the assault. Another survivor detailed the militants' orders to disembark without looking back, amidst gunfire and explosions.

Government Response and Security Measures

In response to the hijacking, Pakistan Railways has suspended all train operations from Punjab and Sindh to Balochistan until the security situation is deemed safe. The BLA's demands include the release of Baloch political prisoners, activists, and individuals they allege have been forcibly disappeared by the military. The group has set a 48-hour deadline, threatening to execute hostages if their conditions are not met.

Background on the Baloch Liberation Army

The BLA is an ethnic armed group seeking greater autonomy for the Balochistan region, which is rich in minerals but has experienced longstanding grievances over resource distribution and political autonomy. The group has previously targeted military and infrastructure projects, including those associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

As the situation unfolds, Pakistani authorities are intensifying efforts to secure the safe release of the remaining hostages while addressing the underlying issues fueling the insurgency in Balochistan.
