In a recent development, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has withdrawn the invitation previously extended to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II. This decision follows interventions from various stakeholders and aims to prevent the politicization or misinterpretation of police actions.
The initial summons was related to an incident during the Sallah celebrations on March 30, 2025, where a procession led by Emir Sanusi resulted in a confrontation that tragically claimed the life of a local vigilante member, Usman Sagiru, and left several others injured. Prior to the celebrations, the police had engaged with both Emir Sanusi and Emir Ado Bayero, leading to a mutual agreement to forgo the traditional Durbar Festival to maintain public safety. Despite this understanding, Emir Sanusi proceeded with a procession after the Eid prayers, leading to the unfortunate events.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that instead of requiring Emir Sanusi to appear in Abuja, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department have been directed to visit Kano to obtain his statement. This approach aligns with the IGP's commitment to ensuring that policing actions remain impartial and free from political influence.
The incident has sparked reactions from various quarters. Prominent figures like human rights advocate Chidi Odinkalu and businessman Atedo Peterside have criticized the initial police invitation, viewing it as an undue harassment of the traditional institution and cautioning against actions that could destabilize Kano.
Furthermore, the Assembly for the Preservation of Traditional Institutions in Nigeria expressed concerns over the summons, suggesting it might be part of a deliberate plan to provoke unrest in Kano. The group emphasized that the matter was already under investigation by the Kano State Police Command, questioning the necessity of involving the Police High Command in Abuja.
This sequence of events underscores the delicate balance between law enforcement procedures and the respect for traditional institutions in Nigeria. It highlights the importance of collaborative efforts to maintain public order while upholding the dignity of cultural leadership.
