Whistleblower Alleges Meta Aided China in Secret Dealings, Exposing U.S. Data and National Security Risks

April 8, 2025 | By Olaoluwa Omotola Oni

In what could be a major turning point in the ongoing debate over Big Tech’s role in national security, a former senior policy executive at Meta (formerly Facebook) is set to deliver explosive testimony before Congress this week.

Sarah Wynn-Williams, who previously held a top policy role at the social media giant, is expected to accuse Meta of secretly collaborating with the Chinese government—allegedly briefing Beijing on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and facilitating access that may have compromised American user data and undermined national security.

Alleged Espionage, Misinformation, and Project Aldrin

According to prepared remarks obtained by multiple news outlets, Wynn-Williams will testify on Wednesday that Meta engaged in a covert initiative known as “Project Aldrin”, which allegedly aimed to assist China in boosting its global technological and political influence.

She will further allege that Meta:

Misled Congress, investors, and the public about its intentions and operations

Established a “data pipeline” that may have left millions of Americans' personal information vulnerable

Shared AI strategy briefings with Chinese government officials in exchange for better market access in China

These revelations could open a new chapter in the growing scrutiny of U.S. tech companies’ dealings with authoritarian regimes, particularly amid rising tensions between Washington and Beijing over data privacy, cybersecurity, and influence operations.

Meta’s Response

Meta has strongly denied all allegations. In a statement released Monday night, the company said:

> “Meta has never compromised U.S. user data or cooperated with foreign governments to undermine national security. Any claims suggesting otherwise are categorically false.”

Still, the company faces intensifying pressure from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Many are now calling for a full-scale investigation into Meta’s foreign partnerships, AI development activities, and internal data handling practices.

Broader Implications

This development arrives amid growing global anxiety over how powerful technology firms interact with foreign powers, especially those with histories of digital surveillance and information control. Meta’s alleged role could lead to sweeping regulatory crackdowns, shareholder lawsuits, and potential criminal probes.

National security analysts warn that if proven true, the implications could be “severe and systemic,” affecting AI development policy, data protection laws, and U.S.–China tech relations for years to come.
