Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has publicly questioned the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, criticizing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for allegedly undermining the will of the people. Speaking at a Democracy Day forum in Ibadan, the governor expressed deep concern over repeated incidents where citizens’ votes appear to have little impact due to what he described as INEC’s failure to uphold transparency and fairness.
"What’s the point of citizens making a choice if that choice is undermined by INEC?" Makinde asked pointedly, drawing attention to ongoing concerns surrounding electoral malpractice, delayed results, and perceived institutional bias.
Governor Makinde, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), also used the platform to call for urgent reforms within Nigeria’s electoral framework to restore public confidence and strengthen democracy. His comments come amid broader national discussions around electoral justice, digital voting technology, and the role of security forces during elections.
Makinde’s statement has reignited debate on the role of INEC and the need for a truly independent and accountable electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections.
