Olu Falae Alleges 1999 Presidential Election Was Rigged in Favor of Obasanjo

In a recent interview, Chief Olu Falae, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and 1999 presidential candidate, asserted that he, not Olusegun Obasanjo, won the 1999 Nigerian presidential election. Falae, who contested under the joint platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Peoples Party (APP), claimed that the military manipulated the election results to favor Obasanjo, a former military head of state.

Falae recounted that initial results from states like Imo showed him leading significantly. However, he alleged that results from certain local governments were altered overnight while he slept, overturning his lead. He believed the military preferred Obasanjo to protect their interests and avoid potential probes into past actions.

Official records indicate that Obasanjo won the election with 18,738,154 votes (62.78%), while Falae garnered 11,110,287 votes (37.22%) . Despite these figures, Falae maintains that the true will of the people was subverted.

This revelation adds to ongoing discussions about the integrity of Nigeria's electoral processes and the influence of military interests in democratic transitions.
