On June 16, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially commissioned the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project's Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, marking a significant milestone in addressing the Federal Capital Territory's water needs. The ceremony, attended by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Minister of State Mariya Mahmoud, and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, underscores the administration's commitment to infrastructure development.
The project, initiated in May 2021, aims to alleviate water scarcity in 50 districts, benefiting approximately 2.5 million residents. Constructed by CGC Nigeria Limited and managed by the Federal Capital Development Authority, the initiative is jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and the Nigerian government. Upon completion, it will enhance the city's water supply capacity by 480,000 cubic meters per day, increasing total capacity from 240,000 to 720,000 m³/d.
President Tinubu emphasized the project's alignment with his Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on delivering essential services to Nigerians. Minister Wike highlighted the project's role in improving living standards and fostering sustainable development within the FCT.
