Oyo State Government Demolishes Abandoned De Castle Inn in Ibadan Over Security Concerns

The Oyo State Government has commenced the demolition of the long-abandoned De Castle Inn located along Queen Elizabeth II Road, near Total Garden in Ibadan. This action follows concerns that the structure had become a haven for criminal activities and posed significant security threats to the surrounding community.

Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey, and Urban Development, Mr. William Akin-Funmilayo, stated that the decision was based on reports from security agencies and local residents indicating that the building was being used by hoodlums and illicit drug users as a hideout. He emphasized that such abandoned structures not only endanger public safety but also undermine the state's urban development efforts.

“We received credible information that this abandoned building has been a hotspot for criminal activities, including theft and drug-related offenses. The government cannot allow such threats to persist in our communities,” Akin-Funmilayo remarked.

The Commissioner reiterated the government's stance that property owners must ensure their buildings are either in use or properly maintained. Failure to do so could result in the state taking over such properties to prevent them from becoming security liabilities.

This move is part of a broader initiative by the Oyo State Government to address the issue of abandoned buildings across the state, which are often exploited by criminals. The government has issued warnings to property owners to rehabilitate or repurpose their abandoned structures or face legal consequences, including forfeiture.

The demolition of De Castle Inn serves as a clear message to property owners about the state's commitment to ensuring public safety and promoting responsible urban development.
