Trump on Possible Elon Musk Deportation: “We’ll Have to Look” as Billionaire Criticizes Federal Spending Bill

In a fresh twist to the ongoing war of words between former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, Trump has suggested that deportation could be on the table—albeit vaguely—following Musk’s outspoken criticism of his latest federal spending bill.

During a media exchange on Monday, Trump was asked whether he would consider deporting Elon Musk. His response: *“We’ll have to look.”* Though no formal proceedings or allegations are known to be underway, the comment has sparked renewed tension between the two high-profile figures.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was born in South Africa and became a naturalized U.S. citizen over two decades ago. Under current U.S. law, deportation of naturalized citizens is only legally possible if it is proven that citizenship was obtained through fraud or willful misrepresentation. So far, there is no evidence suggesting Musk violated any naturalization laws.

The friction stems from Musk’s harsh criticism of Trump’s proposed *“One Big Beautiful Bill,”* a sweeping multi-trillion-dollar federal spending package. Musk labeled the legislation “fiscally reckless” and warned that it would dangerously increase the national debt and weaken the U.S. economy long-term.

Trump, defending the bill as a “necessary investment” in infrastructure, defense, and energy independence, appeared to take Musk’s remarks personally. The former president also accused Musk of using U.S. subsidies to build his empire while now turning against the policies that supported his rise.

This isn’t the first time the two have clashed. Musk previously withdrew from Trump’s advisory council in 2017 over the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement and has since been increasingly vocal on political matters.

Analysts see Trump’s comment as more rhetorical than procedural, yet it raises eyebrows given the growing politicization of immigration law. Immigration experts have cautioned that even suggesting deportation for political dissent sets a troubling precedent.

As Musk continues to champion free-market principles and advocate for reduced government spending, it’s clear the rift between him and Trump is far from over—and may have just entered its most contentious phase yet.
