Bolanle Aminat Sarumi-Aliyu, popularly known as BASA, has officially declared her intention to contest the 2027 gubernatorial election in Oyo State under the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This announcement marks her continued commitment to public service and her vision for transformative leadership in the state.
Political Journey:
Sarumi-Aliyu's political career began with her appointment as Special Assistant on Social Development to the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory in 2011. She later served as the Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs to the Governor of Oyo State from 2020 to 2022, during which she facilitated the repatriation of over 400 Nigerian women who were victims of human trafficking abroad.
In the 2019 elections, she made history as the first female gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State, representing the National Interest Party (NIP). Despite limited resources, her campaign emphasized youth and women's empowerment.
Recent Political Developments:
After a stint with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sarumi-Aliyu resigned in June 2025, citing the party's neglect of loyal aspirants, particularly women and grassroots mobilizers. She emphasized that her departure was a step towards aligning with a platform that reflects her values and aspirations for Oyo State.
In July 2025, she joined the ADC, stating that the party offers "a clean slate—a space to dream again, a platform to build again, a future to own again." She called on her supporters across Oyo State to join the ADC en masse.
Vision for Oyo State:
Sarumi-Aliyu's campaign is centered on inclusive governance, youth and women's empowerment, and sustainable development. Her slogan, "Leadership with Heart," encapsulates her commitment to compassionate and people-centered leadership.
As the 2027 elections approach, Bolanle Sarumi-Aliyu's candidacy under the ADC banner represents a significant moment in Oyo State's political landscape. Her dedication to public service and advocacy for marginalized groups positions her as a formidable contender in the upcoming gubernatorial race.
