In a landmark healthcare reform, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 80% subsidy on kidney dialysis, reducing the cost per session from ₦50,000 to just ₦12,000. This bold move marks a pivotal step toward making life-saving dialysis treatment affordable for Nigerians across the country.
Subsidy Overview
Implementation across the six geopolitical zones, covering diverse regions and ensuring wide accessibility.
Launched in January 2025 at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.
Initially benefitted 35 patients at ATBUTH, supported by one dialysis machine and over 900 dialyzers, courtesy of the Federal Ministry of Health.
Participating Medical Institutions
The subsidy has been rolled out in 11 federal healthcare institutions, ensuring broad regional coverage:
South-West: FMC Ebute-Metta (Lagos), UCH Ibadan, FMC Abeokuta
North-Central: FMC Jabi (Abuja)
South-South: UBTH (Benin), UCTH (Calabar), LUTH (Lagos)
South-East: FMC Owerri
North-East: FMC Azare (Bauchi), UMTH (Maiduguri)
Patient Impact
This subsidy has dramatically changed the dialysis experience for many:
> “They are paying only ₦12,000, and our patients are very happy with this initiative. We have seen remarkable improvement in their condition.”
— Hammatu Haruna, Manager, Renal Centre, ATBUTH
Previously, many patients struggled to afford even one session—some had to sell assets or skip treatment altogether.
With this successful pilot, the government has stated that more federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be onboarded before the end of the year, further expanding access to affordable dialysis across Nigeria.
