Oyo State Enforces Comprehensive Security Measures Ahead of Ibadan North Bye-Election

As the Ibadan North Federal Constituency prepares for its bye-election today, the Oyo State Police Command has implemented extensive security protocols to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process. These measures are part of a broader initiative to uphold democratic integrity and public safety during the election.

🚨 Key Security Measures Implemented

1. Movement Restrictions

A general restriction on movement is in effect from *12:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.* today, August 16, across Ibadan North, Ibadan North East, Ibadan South West, and adjoining areas. This measure aims to minimize disruptions and potential security threats during the voting period.

2. Prohibition of Unauthorized Security Personnel

The deployment of quasi-security outfits, including state-backed groups and private security personnel, is strictly prohibited. Only authorized security agencies are permitted within polling units to maintain order and prevent intimidation.

3. Ban on Political Campaigning and Insignia
All forms of political campaigning, including the display of party logos or insignia at polling units and wards, are banned on election day. This directive ensures a neutral environment conducive to free and fair voting.

4. Alcohol Restrictions

The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited around polling units and wards to maintain decorum and prevent disturbances during the election process.

5. Strict Enforcement Against Vote-Buying

The Oyo State Police Command has declared a zero-tolerance policy towards vote-buying and any form of financial inducement. Individuals found engaging in such activities will face legal consequences, including arrest and prosecution.

👮‍♂️ National Security Reinforcements

In addition to state-level measures, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of senior officers and specialized units, including the Police Mobile Force and the Special Intervention Squad, to oversee security operations in Oyo State and other affected areas. These deployments are part of a nationwide effort to ensure the integrity of the bye-elections taking place across 13 states today.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has also contributed to the security apparatus by deploying 20,850 personnel nationwide to support the electoral process and protect critical infrastructure.

🗣️ Community Engagement and Peace Accord

Ahead of the election, the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) facilitated the signing of a peace accord among political parties and candidates. This agreement underscores a collective commitment to non-violence and adherence to electoral laws.

Commissioner of Police Femi Haruna has urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to discourage youths from engaging in electoral violence or being used as tools for disruption. He emphasized that any violations of election laws will be met with strict legal action.

The Oyo State Police Command, in collaboration with national security agencies, is dedicated to ensuring a secure and transparent electoral process. Residents are encouraged to comply with all directives and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
