Oyo State Unveils Ambitious Agribusiness Industrial Hub in Ijaiye: A Leap Towards Agricultural Industrialization

On August 2, 2025, Oyo State marked a significant milestone in its agricultural transformation journey with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Agribusiness Industrial Hub at Ijaiye, Akinyele Local Government Area. This initiative is part of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) program, a collaborative effort between the Oyo State Government, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Transforming Agriculture into Industry

Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the state's commitment to repositioning agriculture from subsistence to a commercial and industrial powerhouse. "Today is about promises kept," Makinde stated, highlighting the hub's role in creating jobs, attracting investments, and ensuring food security. The Ijaiye SAPZ is the third in the state's series of agribusiness hubs, following successful implementations in Fasola and Eruwa.

Strategic Development and Infrastructure

The Ijaiye hub spans 3,000 hectares, with 300 hectares designated for immediate development. It is poised to host up to 40 agro-processing industries, create over 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, and benefit approximately 500,000 farmers. The hub's strategic location offers proximity to key infrastructure, including the Chief Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station and the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, enhancing its potential as a logistics and export center.

National and International Collaboration

The ceremony witnessed the presence of notable figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima (represented by Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari) and AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina. Vice President Shettima lauded the initiative as a model for national development, stating, "We are laying the foundation for agro-industrial hubs that will empower agro-processors, farmers, stimulate local economies, and make Nigeria a competitive player in global markets."

Dr. Adesina commended Governor Makinde's visionary leadership, noting the success of previous hubs and the state's role in the broader SAPZ program. He highlighted the AfDB's commitment of 934 million, with an additional938 million mobilized, to support 28 SAPZ projects across 11 African countries.

A Model for Rural Transformation

The Ijaiye Agribusiness Industrial Hub represents more than infrastructure; it embodies a systems-based approach to rural transformation, market access, job creation, and economic diversification. By attracting private investors and building on existing infrastructure, Oyo State is charting a path that goes beyond pilot projects, aiming for sustainable and inclusive growth.

Governor Makinde concluded, "Let today’s event be a reminder to every citizen of Oyo State—governance is not theory. It is action. And when we say we will deliver, we mean it."
