Selective Justice? ADC Claims EFCC Targets Opposition While APC Allies Walk Free

ADC Accuses EFCC of Targeting Opposition Leaders Ahead of 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over what it perceives as a targeted campaign by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against prominent opposition figures. The party alleges that these actions are politically motivated, aiming to weaken the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Details of Allegations:
ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, highlighted the recent interrogation of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, by the EFCC over alleged financial misconduct. Similarly, former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has been invited for questioning regarding his brief tenure in 2019.

The ADC contends that these investigations are part of a broader strategy to discredit and intimidate opposition leaders, thereby undermining the coalition's efforts to present a united front in the upcoming elections.

EFCC's Response:
In response to the allegations, the EFCC has denied any political bias, asserting that its actions are in line with its mandate to combat financial crimes. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated that the commission operates independently and does not serve the interests of any political party.

Political Context:
The ADC, along with other opposition parties, has recently formed a coalition aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections. This alliance includes notable figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, both of whom were runners-up in the previous presidential election.

The coalition has accused the current administration of attempting to establish a one-party state by using state mechanisms to coerce opposition members into defecting to the ruling party.

The ADC's allegations against the EFCC underscore the growing tensions between Nigeria's ruling party and the opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the impartiality of institutions like the EFCC remains a critical concern for the health of Nigeria's democracy.
