In a unified stance, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors' Forum has expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating security situation and the conduct of recent by-elections across Nigeria. The forum highlighted incidents of killings, kidnappings, and property destruction in states including Zamfara, Katsina, Plateau, Niger, and Benue, and criticized the alleged militarization and irregularities observed during the by-elections.
Rising Insecurity Across States
The PDP Governors' Forum condemned the persistent violence affecting various regions. In a communiqué issued after their meeting in Gusau, Zamfara State, the governors specifically mentioned the "continued monstrous killings" in Katsina, Plateau, Niger, and Benue States. They urged the federal government to take more decisive actions to protect citizens' lives and properties.
Amnesty International's recent report underscores the severity of the situation, revealing that over 10,000 people have been killed in attacks by armed groups since May 2023. Benue State alone accounts for approximately 6,896 of these deaths, with Plateau State recording at least 2,630 fatalities. The report also highlights the displacement of thousands and the destruction of numerous villages, emphasizing the urgent need for effective security measures.
Concerns Over By-Election Conduct
The forum also addressed issues surrounding the recent by-elections held on August 16, 2025, in 16 federal and state constituencies across 12 states. The governors alleged that the elections were "over-militarised" and marred by widespread irregularities, including vote buying and violence. They called on Nigerians to be vigilant in protecting their votes and urged the federal government to ensure free and fair electoral processes.
Advocacy for Decentralized Security
In response to the escalating insecurity, the PDP Governors' Forum advocated for the decentralization of Nigeria's security apparatus. They proposed the establishment of state police forces to enhance local security management. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, speaking on behalf of the forum, emphasized that state governments are better positioned to understand and address the unique security challenges within their jurisdictions.
Humanitarian Efforts and Support
Demonstrating solidarity with affected communities, the PDP Governors' Forum donated ₦100 million to victims of recent crises in Plateau State. This gesture aims to provide relief and support to those impacted by the ongoing violence.
The PDP Governors' Forum's recent statements reflect deep concern over Nigeria's security challenges and the integrity of its democratic processes. By advocating for decentralized security measures and highlighting electoral irregularities, the forum calls for immediate and effective actions to safeguard the nation's stability and democratic values.
