In a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, the U.S. State Department has approved a $346 million arms sale package, aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s operational capabilities in counter-terrorism and internal security operations.
The proposed deal, announced by the *Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA)*, includes *precision-guided munitions, air-dropped bombs, and advanced missile systems*. This advanced military hardware is intended to support Nigeria’s battle against *Boko Haram insurgents*, *ISWAP*, and other destabilizing forces wreaking havoc across the northern and central regions of the country.
Strategic Objectives of the Sale:
- Enhance Nigeria’s ability to conduct precision strikes against terrorist hideouts
- Support regional stability and counter-illicit trafficking
- Strengthen bilateral U.S.-Nigeria defense relations
- Advance Nigeria’s capability to support peacekeeping missions
Although the deal still awaits Congressional approval, it marks another milestone in U.S. military support to Nigeria, following the 997 million military aircraft and training package approved in 2022.
The DSCA emphasized that the sale would not compromise U.S. defense readiness, and instead aligns with U.S. foreign policy objectives in Africa, particularly in securing strategic partners and stabilizing volatile regions.
