The bail application hearing for Nigerian musician Afunsho Ridwan Abiola, popularly known as Rolex Dee, is scheduled to take place on Monday before Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The development has sparked renewed calls for justice, due process and the protection of fundamental rights, with human rights advocates, supporters and concerned Nigerians being urged to attend the proceedings in solidarity.
The solidarity gathering is expected to take place at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, on the 4th Floor of the New Building on Bourdillon Road.
The campaign for Rolex Dee’s release has gained momentum amid allegations surrounding his detention and the circumstances that led to his arrest. Public statements circulating in connection with the case have linked the matter to musician Taye Currency, with supporters of Rolex Dee accusing the police of being used to facilitate what they describe as an oppressive process against the artiste.
Those allegations, however, remain matters for the appropriate authorities and the courts to determine. The scheduled bail hearing provides an opportunity for the legal process to address the circumstances of Rolex Dee’s detention and determine whether he should be granted bail pending the determination of the matter.
The controversy has also raised broader questions about the responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force when dealing with complaints involving citizens. Under the Police Act, the police have statutory responsibilities that include preventing and detecting crime, apprehending offenders, preserving law and order, protecting life and property, and enforcing applicable laws. Nigerian courts have similarly recognised these responsibilities as duties owed to the generality of Nigerians.
It is against this legal background that supporters of Rolex Dee are demanding that the police exercise their powers strictly within the bounds of the law and respect the fundamental rights of the accused.
The call for solidarity is therefore being framed not simply as a campaign for one individual, but as a broader demand for accountability, fairness and due process in the administration of criminal justice.
“We demand justice and freedom for Rolex Dee without delay,” the campaigners declared, urging Lagos residents, human rights defenders and other freedom-loving Nigerians to attend Monday’s proceedings.
Human rights attorney Damilare Adenola is expected to lead the legal process on behalf of Rolex Dee as the court considers the bail application.
The case has attracted public attention at a particularly sensitive time, following reports that Rolex Dee’s family has also suffered serious personal consequences amid his detention. Leadership reported recently that the musician’s father died after reportedly collapsing following news concerning his son’s detention.
With the matter now before the Federal High Court, attention will shift to the courtroom on Monday, where the arguments surrounding bail and the continued detention of Rolex Dee will come under judicial scrutiny.
For supporters, the message is clear: the proceedings should be conducted transparently, the rights of all parties respected, and any allegations established through due process rather than public pressure.
The campaigners are consequently calling on their supporters to converge at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, in a peaceful show of solidarity.
