Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of veteran Yoruba actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, at the age of 66.
The heartbreaking development was reported on Sunday, August 23, 2026, with QED.ng stating that Ogogo’s death was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an Instagram Live session. Other Nigerian media outlets have also reported his death, with Naija News reporting that the actor died after his recent battle with cancer.
The news comes only days after Nigerians were alerted to the seriousness of Ogogo’s health condition. His daughters had disclosed that the respected actor was battling stage-four cancer and had made emotional appeals for medical assistance as the family searched for treatment options.
Ogogo’s health crisis had generated widespread concern across Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Fellow actors, filmmakers and fans rallied around the veteran as his family sought specialist medical intervention.
In an emotional public appeal, his daughters explained that the family had only recently become fully aware of the seriousness of his condition. Reports at the time indicated that the family was seeking medical direction and possible treatment options rather than simply financial assistance.
The situation also attracted controversy after Kira Taiwo alleged that some individuals were attempting to profit from her father’s illness by demanding substantial sums of money in exchange for supposed medical assistance. She mentioned demands running into hundreds of thousands and millions of naira, as well as dollar amounts, while insisting that the family’s priority was finding appropriate treatment for their father.
Ogogo’s death is particularly painful because it follows an earlier wave of false reports about his passing. On August 18, his family had publicly dismissed reports that he had died, with one of his daughters describing the reports as false and urging the public to stop circulating unverified information.
However, the latest reports are markedly different, with QED.ng citing his daughter Kira as the source of the announcement on Sunday.
Taiwo Hassan was one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema. Known professionally as Ogogo, he built a decades-long career as an actor, producer, director and screenwriter, becoming a household name among lovers of Nigerian films. His career included appearances in numerous productions and notable roles in films such as Omo Ghetto, Aníkúlápó and Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre.
Beyond his screen performances, Ogogo represented a generation of Yoruba actors who helped establish and sustain the indigenous Nigerian film industry. His distinctive acting style, commanding presence and longevity made him a respected figure among both colleagues and audiences.
His reported passing therefore represents more than the loss of another Nollywood personality; it marks the departure of one of the veterans whose work helped shape Yoruba cinema over several decades.
As news of his death continues to spread, tributes are expected from colleagues, admirers and the wider Nigerian entertainment community.
RIP, Ogogo. May Taiwo Hassan’s soul rest in peace.
