Honourable Lanre Jinadu has celebrated the legendary Nigerian musician, Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade (KSA), as the internationally acclaimed King of Juju Music marks his 80th birthday.
For Hon. Jinadu, however, the celebration is far more than a tribute to a celebrated musician. It is a celebration of a longstanding relationship built on friendship, business, mentorship, trust and mutual respect.
I vividly remember when I first visited Hon. Lanre Jinadu at his office in Mokola, Ibadan. A bold and prominently displayed photograph of Hon. Lanre alongside Chief Sunday Adegeye, King Sunny Ade, immediately caught my attention.
I asked him, “Are you associated with King Sunny Ade?”
His response was striking: “He is my Chairman, godfather and benefactor.”
He went on to explain that Chief Sunny Ade is the Chairman of his company, Bluegill Resource Ltd, which was founded in 2008, while he serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. According to Hon. Lanre, the two have maintained a serious business relationship spanning well over three decades.
He further recalled that the Ibadan office of Bluegill Resource Ltd was officially declared open by King Sunny Ade on February 15, 2013, underscoring the personal and professional significance of their relationship.
“KSA’s humility and sense of humour is second to none. He calls me his friend and confidant,” Hon. Lanre said.
That relationship has also been evident in public. Since I first became aware of their association more than a decade ago, there has hardly been a time King Sunny Ade performed in Ibadan when Hon. Lanre was not present as part of his entourage and support system.
The longevity of the relationship is particularly significant given King Sunny Ade’s extraordinary standing in Nigerian and global music.
Born Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye on September 22, 1946, the legendary musician has spent more than six decades shaping and promoting jùjú music. On his 80th birthday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described him as an icon of Nigerian and African music whose creativity helped transform jùjú into a globally recognised Nigerian cultural treasure.
King Sunny Ade’s musical career dates back to the 1960s. His innovative approach incorporated traditional Yoruba musical elements with guitars, talking drums and other instruments, while his energetic stage performances helped redefine the presentation of jùjú music. Channels Television notes that he also pioneered distinctive performance innovations, including moving musicians from the traditional seated arrangement to a more dynamic standing presentation with synchronised choreography.
By the late 1970s, Ade had become widely known as the “King of Juju Music.” Encyclopaedia.com records that he was ordained by journalists and music critics in that period, while historical accounts place his emergence as one of the dominant figures of jùjú music around the same era.
His international breakthrough followed in the early 1980s, particularly with albums such as Juju Music and Synchro System, introducing his distinctive sound to audiences far beyond Nigeria. His international career helped establish him as one of Africa’s most recognisable musical ambassadors.
His connection with Ibadan is also significant. Historical accounts have linked his coronation as the King of Juju Music to a public ceremony in Ibadan in the late 1970s, further cementing the city’s place in his remarkable musical journey.
Beyond his music, King Sunny Ade has long been associated with innovation, professionalism and a distinctive approach to live performance. Hon. Lanre’s recollection further portrays a musician whose attention to the quality and continuity of his performances extended to ensuring that technical disruptions would not interfere with his audience experience.
At 80, King Sunny Ade remains a towering figure in Nigerian music and a cultural ambassador whose influence has crossed generations and international borders.
For Hon. Lanre Jinadu, the milestone is therefore both public and personal: an opportunity to honour his Chairman, godfather, benefactor, friend and confidant, and to celebrate a relationship that, according to him, has endured for well over three decades.
