Edo Election Tribunal to Deliver Verdict on PDP’s Petition Against APC’s Victory Today

Edo Governorship Election Tribunal Set to Deliver Judgment on PDP's Petition Challenging APC's Victory

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, is scheduled to deliver its judgment today, Wednesday, April 2, 2025, on the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo. The petition challenges the outcome of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, which resulted in the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

Background of the Petition

Following the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) announcement of the election results, the PDP and Ighodalo filed a petition alleging significant irregularities, including manipulated results in 765 polling units. They contend that these alleged malpractices compromised the election's integrity and are seeking the annulment of Okpebholo's victory.

Proceedings and Deliberations

The tribunal, a three-member panel led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, reserved judgment on March 3, 2025, after all parties presented and adopted their final written addresses. The tribunal's secretary subsequently communicated the judgment date to the involved parties.

Positions of the Parties Involved

PDP and Asue Ighodalo: The petitioners argue that the election was marred by substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022, and that Okpebholo did not secure the highest number of lawful votes. They are requesting the tribunal to invalidate the election results.

APC and Governor Okpebholo: The respondents have dismissed the allegations, asserting that the election was conducted in compliance with legal standards and that Okpebholo's victory reflects the electorate's will. They have urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition as lacking merit.

Anticipation and Security Measures

The impending judgment has heightened tensions and anticipation among political stakeholders and the general public in Edo State. Authorities have reportedly implemented security measures to maintain peace and order during and after the tribunal's decision.

Implications of the Tribunal's Decision

The tribunal's ruling holds significant implications for Edo State's political landscape. A decision in favor of the PDP could lead to a rerun of the election or other legal remedies, while a ruling upholding Okpebholo's victory would affirm the APC's mandate. Both parties have expressed confidence in the judicial process and have called on their supporters to remain calm and law-abiding.

As the tribunal prepares to deliver its judgment, all eyes are on the outcome, which will undoubtedly shape the future governance of Edo State.
