In a significant political development, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside prominent political figures such as former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, have announced the formation of a united opposition coalition. This alliance aims to present a formidable challenge to President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
The coalition was unveiled during a press conference at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where Atiku Abubakar confirmed the group's intention to contest the 2027 elections as a consolidated opposition front. He emphasized the coalition's commitment to restoring democratic principles and addressing what they perceive as unconstitutional actions by the current administration, particularly referencing the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of its elected officials.
Nasir El-Rufai, who recently resigned from the APC and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has been instrumental in rallying opposition leaders to unify under the SDP banner. He has publicly invited Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, and other opposition figures to join the SDP, advocating for a collective effort to unseat the APC in 2027.
The coalition's formation has garnered support from various political stakeholders, including 15 state governors who have reportedly aligned with the movement. The alliance is gaining traction across multiple regions, with significant inroads in the South East, South-South, and parts of the North, indicating a broad-based support network.
However, the coalition faces internal challenges, particularly concerning the selection of a consensus presidential candidate. Discussions are ongoing to address issues related to zoning and individual political ambitions, as key figures like Atiku, Obi, and Amaechi are considered potential contenders for the presidency.
In response to the coalition's activities, the Presidency has dismissed their efforts as premature, with Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, challenging the opposition leaders to test their popularity in the 2027 elections.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the political landscape is poised for significant shifts, with the newly formed coalition representing a concerted effort by opposition leaders to present a unified front against the incumbent administration.
