In 1958, a young Nigerian named Fela Anikulapo-Kuti arrived in London with the intention of studying medicine, as per his family's wishes. However, his passion for music led him to Trinity College of Music (now Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), where he enrolled to study composition and trumpet performance.
Despite initial challenges, including academic hurdles, Fela's determination and musical talent secured his place at the institution. During his time at Trinity, he formed the band Koola Lobitos, blending jazz and highlife influences—a precursor to the Afrobeat genre he would later pioneer.
Fela's journey from a reluctant medical student to a musical innovator underscores the importance of following one's passion. His experiences at Trinity laid the foundation for a career that would not only revolutionize music but also challenge political norms in Nigeria and beyond.
