The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the dates for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states. The elections will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2026, in Ekiti State and Saturday, August 8, 2026, in Osun State.
This was disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly confirmed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Friday. The RECs were recently confirmed by the National Assembly and will play key roles in overseeing the commission's electoral activities in their respective states.
Yakubu stated that the dates were carefully chosen in line with the commission’s constitutional responsibilities and the provisions of the Electoral Act. He noted that INEC has already begun preparations to ensure the elections are free, fair, and credible.
In addition to the governorship elections, Yakubu revealed that INEC is finalizing plans to conduct several bye-elections to fill vacant seats in both the National and State Houses of Assembly. These vacancies have arisen due to deaths, resignations, and other legal circumstances.
He urged the newly sworn-in RECs to uphold the commission’s commitment to electoral integrity, professionalism, and neutrality, as the 2026 electoral calendar begins to take shape.
INEC is expected to publish a comprehensive timetable and schedule of activities for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections in the coming weeks, detailing timelines for party primaries, campaigns, and voter registration updates.
