Makinde Moves to Revive Oyo Council of Obas and Chiefs, Pledges Official Vehicle for Olubadan

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that the State House of Assembly is actively working on reconstituting the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, which has been inactive since 2011. This initiative aims to restore the council's role in the state's governance and cultural affairs.

In a recent meeting with traditional rulers at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Makinde, represented by his Deputy, Bayo Lawal, emphasized the importance of the council's functionality. He stated that the government has solicited recommendations from monarchs across the state's five geopolitical zones to ensure an inclusive and effective reconstitution process.

Additionally, Governor Makinde assured that the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, will receive a befitting official vehicle before the end of May. This gesture underscores the administration's commitment to honoring and supporting traditional institutions in Oyo State.

The reconstitution of the Council of Obas and Chiefs is part of broader chieftaincy reforms under Governor Makinde's administration. In May 2023, he signed the Oyo State Chieftaincy Amendment Bill into law, aiming to streamline the traditional council's operations and address previous legal challenges.

These efforts reflect the government's dedication to preserving the cultural heritage and enhancing the roles of traditional rulers in the state's development.
