Oyo State Misses Out Again: Why a Federal Technical College is Urgently Needed in the Pacesetter State

In a transformative move to promote technical and vocational education, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the removal of tuition and boarding fees for students in all 33 Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) across the country, effective from the 2025–2026 academic session. Unfortunately, Oyo State is not among the beneficiaries of this opportunity — a glaring omission for a state with massive youth potential and a rich educational heritage. This call was made by Honorable Biodun Sanusi insisting that Oyo State is in dire need of a Federal Science and Technical College.

---

What Is the Federal Government Offering?

The Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative, which officially launches in August 2025, is designed to empower Nigerian youth with hands-on, industry-relevant skills. The program is part of Nigeria’s strategic efforts to bridge the skill gap and reduce youth unemployment by equipping students with credentials and practical experience that meet the needs of today’s labor market.

---

Key Benefits of the FG’s TVET Program:

Students admitted into the FSTCs will enjoy the following:

1. Completely Free Tuition for the full 3-year training period.

2. Free Accommodation and Feeding throughout the program.

3. Monthly Stipends for students’ upkeep.

4. National Business and Technical Certificates upon graduation.

5. Second-Level National Skills Qualification (NSQ) certificate with global recognition.

6. Access to Federal Grants or Startup Loans after graduation.

7. Entrepreneurship Support for self-employment opportunities.

8. Hands-On Training in Sectors such as engineering, construction, hospitality, ICT, and healthcare.

9. Job Readiness Skills aligned with local and international labor demands.

10. Globally Acceptable Certification for those wishing to work abroad.

Despite the benefits, Oyo State was left out of the list of participating colleges. Below is the full list of approved FSTCs:

Oyo State: The Case for Inclusion

The exclusion of Oyo State from this impactful initiative is both surprising and disappointing. As a state known for academic excellence and youth energy, this missed opportunity calls for urgent advocacy and government intervention.

Why Oyo Needs a Federal Science and Technical College:

High Youth Population with a demand for skill-based education.

Large Urban and Rural Labor Pool that could benefit from technical training.

Underemployment Crisis that can be solved through vocational empowerment.

Potential Economic Growth through a technically skilled workforce.

Complementary to Local Educational Institutions like The Polytechnic Ibadan and LAUTECH.

Stakeholders in Oyo — from political leaders to traditional rulers, education experts, and civil society — must rally and lobby for the establishment of an FSTC in the state. The Federal Government’s gesture presents a strategic chance for sustainable youth empowerment, and Oyo must not be left behind.

Final Thoughts: A Wake-Up Call for Oyo State

As Nigeria leans into the future of work and skill-based development, states without FSTCs are already falling behind. For a state as strategic as Oyo, the time to act is now. It is crucial that our representatives engage the Federal Ministry of Education and demand immediate inclusion in future expansions of the TVET program.
