Yoruba Cinema’s Oyo Obsession: A Call to Explore Untold Histories Beyond the Empire

Beyond Oyo: Diversifying Yoruba Historical Narratives in Nollywood

In recent years, Yoruba-centric Nollywood productions have predominantly spotlighted the Oyo Empire, often revisiting its grandeur and historical significance. While Oyo's rich history offers compelling narratives, this singular focus has overshadowed other equally profound Yoruba histories and legends.

Notable productions such as *Lisabi*, *House of Ga’a*, *Aníkúlápó*, *Elesin Oba*, *Jagun Jagun*, and *The Woman King* have delved into various aspects of Oyo's past. For instance, *House of Ga’a* explores the life of Bashorun Ga’a, a powerful 18th-century nobleman in the Oyo Empire . Similarly, *Aníkúlápó* and its sequel series *Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre* intertwine Yoruba folklore with the spiritual and political dynamics of the Oyo Empire . *Jagun Jagun* portrays the story of a young warrior challenging a tyrannical warlord in a fictional Yoruba kingdom. Even *The Woman King*, while centered on the Dahomey Kingdom, references the Oyo Empire's influence in the region.

The latest addition, Showmax's *Kabiyesi*, draws inspiration from the reign of Orompoto, the only female Alaafin of Oyo, weaving a tale of ambition, betrayal, and leadership in the 16th-century Oyo Empire

While these stories are invaluable, Yoruba history encompasses a vast array of narratives beyond Oyo. Exploring tales such as the mystery of the Eyo Festival, the origin of Odùduwà, the warrior exploits of Ajagunla of Ìgbómìnà, the founding stories of Alára, Ajẹ̀ró, and Òràngún, the spiritual journeys of Ọya and Òṣun, and the resistance of Oba Ẹṣugbayi against colonial imposition can provide fresh perspectives and enrich Nollywood's storytelling tapestry.

By venturing beyond the familiar terrains of Oyo, filmmakers can unearth a treasure trove of narratives that reflect the diverse and multifaceted history of the Yoruba people. This diversification not only honors the entirety of Yoruba heritage but also offers audiences a broader understanding of its cultural and historical richness.
