In a significant escalation of internal tensions within Nigeria's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Dare Adeleke, Special Adviser to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde on Federal Constituency Matters, has publicly accused Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating efforts to dismantle opposition parties, thereby facilitating the All Progressives Congress's (APC) consolidation of power ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adeleke criticized Wike's persistent attacks on PDP leadership as "undemocratic and arrogant," suggesting that these actions are part of a broader strategy to undermine the party's cohesion and effectiveness. He alleged that Wike's maneuvers are designed to secure President Bola Tinubu's re-election by weakening opposition forces.
This accusation aligns with sentiments expressed by other PDP members. For instance, Tonye Cole, a former APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, stated that Wike's role within the PDP appears aimed at weakening the party to the benefit of the APC . Similarly, Robinson Ewor, a factional chairman of the PDP in Rivers State, accused Wike of acting as an APC mole, working to destroy the opposition from within.
The internal discord has prompted calls for decisive action. A coalition of opposition lawmakers recently urged the PDP's National Working Committee to expel Wike and other officials accused of undermining the party, warning of potential mass defections if the issues remain unaddressed.
Wike, however, has dismissed these allegations, asserting his commitment to the PDP while criticizing the party's leadership for its handling of internal affairs.
As the PDP grapples with these internal challenges, the party's ability to present a united front in the upcoming 2027 elections remains uncertain. The outcome of this internal strife could significantly impact Nigeria's political landscape in the years to come.
