Pope Leo XIV Officially Installed as First American Pontiff in Historic Vatican Ceremony

On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Pope Leo XIV was formally installed as the 267th leader of the Catholic Church during a grand inaugural Mass in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. The ceremony drew an estimated 250,000 attendees, including numerous global dignitaries and religious leaders, marking a significant moment in the Church's history. 

Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV is the first American and the first individual with dual U.S.-Peruvian citizenship to ascend to the papacy. His election followed the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. 

The inauguration ceremony featured traditional rites, including the bestowal of the pallium—a woolen band symbolizing the pope's pastoral authority—and the Fisherman's Ring, signifying his role as the successor to Saint Peter. Pope Leo XIV also made his first appearance in the popemobile, greeting the faithful gathered in the square. 

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV emphasized themes of peace, unity, and the importance of addressing global challenges such as conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, as well as the ethical implications of artificial intelligence. 

Notable attendees included U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, and leaders from various European nations. 

Pope Leo XIV's inauguration coincides with the Catholic Church's 2025 Jubilee Year, a period of pilgrimage and reflection. His upcoming schedule includes taking possession of Rome's major basilicas and holding his first general audience.
