Benue State Faces Renewed Violence: Over 60 Killed and 200 Homes Destroyed in Herdsmen Attacks

In a tragic escalation of violence, Benue State, Nigeria, has witnessed a series of deadly attacks attributed to suspected armed herdsmen. Over the past weekend, coordinated assaults in the Apa and Gwer West Local Government Areas resulted in the deaths of more than 60 individuals and the destruction of over 200 homes.

Residents of affected communities report that the assailants launched surprise attacks, opening fire on civilians and setting homes ablaze. The assaults have led to mass displacements, with hundreds fleeing their homes in search of safety. Local authorities have confirmed the incidents, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has condemned the attacks, describing them as "a flagrant affront to the peace and security of our communities." He has assured residents that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and restore normalcy to the affected areas. The governor also appealed for calm, urging citizens to refrain from retaliatory actions that could exacerbate the situation.

These recent attacks are part of a disturbing pattern of violence in Benue State. In April 2025, similar incidents in Otobi Akpa community resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals and the burning of 50 houses. Earlier, in March 2025, 11 people were killed in Mbagena community, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, during an attack by suspected herdsmen.

The persistent insecurity has had a profound impact on the state's agricultural sector. A recent study published on arXiv highlights that increased insecurity correlates with a significant decrease in both crop and livestock output in Benue State. The study recommends the deployment of more security personnel, establishment of community policing initiatives, and the use of modern surveillance technologies to deter criminal activities. Additionally, it suggests the provision of grazing reserves for herdsmen and the strengthening of laws prohibiting open grazing.

As Benue State grapples with these challenges, there is a pressing need for comprehensive strategies that address both immediate security concerns and the underlying causes of the conflict. Collaboration between federal and state authorities, community leaders, and civil society organizations will be crucial in restoring peace and stability to the region.
