The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), has been at the forefront of enforcing these regulations. Recent operations have led to the arrest of over 300 individuals for various waste-related infractions. Many of these offenders have been prosecuted, with penalties ranging from fines to community service, underscoring the state's zero-tolerance policy towards environmental offenses.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, "Our goal is to prevent avoidable issues like flooding and disease outbreaks. We can't achieve this without the support of the people. Environmental protection is everyone's responsibility."
The enforcement teams have been particularly active during nighttime hours, a period identified for increased illegal dumping activities. In one notable incident, 25 individuals, including six vehicle owners, were apprehended for using their vehicles to dispose of large volumes of waste around Abati Primary School along Shasha Road in the Alimosho area.
To further support proper waste management, LAWMA encourages residents to utilize accredited Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators for waste disposal and to participate in programs like "Adopt A Bin," which promotes the use of designated waste receptacles.
The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents. By enforcing stringent penalties and promoting public awareness, the state aims to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability.
