Operation Spiderweb: Ukraine's 117-Drone Offensive Disables 34% of Russia's Strategic Bomber Fleet

On June 1, 2025, Ukraine executed a meticulously planned drone offensive, codenamed Operation Spiderweb, targeting Russian military airbases deep within Russian territory. This unprecedented operation involved 117 drones striking five key airbases: Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo Severny, Olenya, and Ukrainka, spanning five Russian regions and time zones.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that the operation resulted in the destruction or damage of 41 Russian military aircraft, including strategic bombers such as the Tu-95, Tu-22M, and Tu-160, as well as an A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft. Notably, 34% of Russia's strategic cruise missile carriers stationed at these airbases were hit.

Innovatively, the drones were concealed within trucks disguised as civilian vehicles, allowing them to be positioned near the targeted airbases without detection. Upon activation, the drones launched from these mobile platforms, catching Russian defenses off guard.

President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the operation as a "brilliant" success, emphasizing its strategic impact on Russia's military capabilities. The operation, prepared over 18 months, showcases Ukraine's evolving military tactics and its ability to conduct deep strikes within Russian territory.

Analysts suggest that the loss of these aircraft, many of which are irreplaceable due to their age and the cessation of their production post-Soviet Union, could take years for Russia to recover. The strategic impact of Operation Spiderweb underscores a pivotal shift in warfare, where inexpensive drones can effectively challenge and damage high-value military assets.
