The Oyo State Government has intensified efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure in Ibadan by expanding the scope of the ongoing reconstruction of the 5.5 km Adegbayi Junction-Bus Terminal-Iwo Road Interchange and initiating the rehabilitation of the Iwo Road Roundabout. These projects aim to address persistent traffic congestion and flooding issues in the area.
The expansion, approved by the Oyo State Executive Council on December 10, 2024, includes the construction of an underpass, double box culverts, and lined drains along the interchange. The project, awarded to Kopek Construction Limited, commenced in January 2022 and is approximately 75% complete, with an estimated completion date in February 2024.
The rehabilitation of the Iwo Road Roundabout is a timely intervention to mitigate flooding during the rainy season and improve traffic flow. The area has been prone to waterlogging, causing significant delays and safety concerns for commuters.
Complementing these efforts is the construction of Terminals 1 and 2 of the Iwo Road Bus Interchange, which will feature administrative offices, restaurants, and shops. These terminals are part of the four bus terminals being constructed by the Oyo State Government, with the other two at Challenge and Ojoo already completed and operational.
The state government has also approved the dualisation of the Ibadan Airport Road and adjoining access roads, including an extension of the Ibadan Iwo Road interchange to Adegbayi Road by 400 meters on both sides of the 7.3-meter carriageway. This project, valued at N4.9 billion and awarded to Kopek Construction Limited, is expected to be completed within six months.
These infrastructure projects underscore the commitment of Governor Seyi Makinde's administration to improving transportation networks, reducing travel time, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents in Oyo State.
