15 Killed in Sokoto Village Attack as Lakurawa Terrorists Target Worshippers and Farmers

In a devastating assault on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, suspected Lakurawa terrorists attacked Kwalajiya village in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 individuals. The assailants targeted both worshippers and farmers, opening fire indiscriminately during the early hours of the day.

Local sources report that the attackers arrived on motorcycles, a common tactic among armed groups in the region, and began shooting sporadically, causing chaos and panic among the villagers. The victims were laid to rest later that evening in accordance with Islamic rites.

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence attributed to the Lakurawa group, an armed faction operating in several local government areas of Sokoto State, including Tangaza, Gudu, Illela, Binji, and Silame. The group, affiliated with the Islamic State Sahel Province, has been responsible for numerous attacks on rural communities, often targeting farmers during the planting season, thereby exacerbating food insecurity and displacement in the region.

In response to the escalating violence, security forces, including troops from Operation Fansan Yanma and local police units, have intensified patrols and launched manhunts for the perpetrators. However, the porous borders between Nigeria and neighboring countries like Niger and Mali have made it challenging to contain the group's movements and activities.

The Sokoto State Government has expressed deep concern over the persistent attacks and has called for increased federal support to bolster security measures in the affected areas. Community leaders and residents are also urging for more proactive strategies to protect vulnerable populations and restore peace in the region.

As the situation remains volatile, the need for comprehensive security reforms and regional cooperation becomes ever more critical to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety of Nigeria's rural communities.
