As the global community commemorates World Refugee Day 2026 on June 20, a day set aside by the United Nations to honor the courage, resilience, and strength of millions of refugees and displaced persons around the world, frontline House of Representatives aspirant for the Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO), has extended his heartfelt solidarity to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and vulnerable populations across Nigeria and beyond.
In a goodwill message marking the annual observance, Hon. Ogunbayo emphasized the importance of compassion, unity, and collective responsibility in addressing the humanitarian challenges facing millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, insecurity, persecution, natural disasters, and economic hardship.
According to OJO, World Refugee Day serves as a powerful reminder that behind every refugee statistic is a human story of hope, survival, sacrifice, and determination. He noted that despite unimaginable challenges, refugees continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience while contributing positively to the communities that welcome them.
"Nigeria remains one of Africa's leading nations in providing refuge and support for displaced populations. As we commemorate World Refugee Day, we must renew our commitment to protecting human dignity, promoting peace, and creating opportunities for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to circumstances beyond their control," he stated.
The federal lawmaker hopeful further stressed the need for governments at all levels, development partners, civil society organizations, faith-based institutions, and community leaders to strengthen policies and interventions that guarantee access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and social inclusion for displaced persons.
Hon. Ogunbayo noted that sustainable solutions to displacement must go beyond emergency assistance and focus on long-term development, empowerment, security, and social integration. He called for greater investment in peace-building initiatives, youth empowerment programs, and community development projects capable of addressing the root causes of displacement and forced migration.
"As a people, we must continue to uphold the values of empathy, justice, and humanity. Every individual deserves the opportunity to live in safety, pursue their dreams, and contribute meaningfully to society regardless of their background or circumstance," he added.
The aspirant, widely regarded as one of the emerging voices of progressive leadership in Ibadan North-West and Ibadan South-West, reaffirmed his commitment to championing policies that prioritize human development, social welfare, youth advancement, and inclusive governance.
He further urged residents of the constituency and Nigerians at large to use the occasion of World Refugee Day to reflect on the importance of kindness, tolerance, and support for vulnerable populations while promoting peaceful coexistence in their respective communities.
Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo (OJO) concluded by paying tribute to humanitarian workers, volunteers, security personnel, and organizations working tirelessly to provide relief, protection, and hope to refugees and displaced persons across Nigeria and the world.
"Together, we can build a society where every individual is valued, protected, and empowered to thrive. Let us stand in solidarity with refugees today and always."
