Singapore’s Streets Swallow Cars: Is the ‘Smart Nation’ Crumbling Beneath Its Feet?

Singapore's Tanjong Katong Sinkhole Incident: Government Initiates Investigation into Infrastructure Failure

On July 26, 2025, a significant infrastructure failure occurred on Tanjong Katong Road South in Singapore, where a sinkhole suddenly formed, engulfing a moving vehicle. The incident, captured on dashcam footage, showed the road collapsing beneath a black Mazda, which was nearly submerged in a water-filled cavity.

The driver, a woman traveling alone, was promptly rescued by nearby workers from a Public Utilities Board (PUB) worksite. They utilized a nylon rope to extract her from the sinkhole before emergency services arrived. She was conscious during the rescue and was subsequently taken to Raffles Hospital for medical evaluation.

The sinkhole's formation is believed to be associated with ongoing construction activities in the vicinity. PUB reported that two water pipelines were damaged during the collapse, leading to water supply disruptions in the surrounding areas. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has closed the affected section of Tanjong Katong Road South between Mountbatten Road and the East Coast Parkway (ECP) until further notice.

Singapore's Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, has labeled the incident as "serious" and has directed PUB to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the sinkhole. The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) has also been engaged to assess the structural integrity of nearby buildings, with preliminary checks indicating no immediate threats.

This event has raised concerns regarding urban infrastructure resilience and the importance of stringent safety protocols in construction zones. Authorities are working diligently to repair the damage and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
