The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned recent protests in Ghana targeting Nigerian nationals, labeling the demonstrations as "deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood."
In a statement issued by Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), the Senate expressed concern over viral videos showing Ghanaians demanding the expulsion of Nigerians from their country.
The protests, which took place in Accra, featured demonstrators accusing Nigerians of various crimes and calling for their removal.
Senator Bassey emphasized the need to preserve the longstanding bond between Nigeria and Ghana, urging both nations to uphold the principles of peace, unity, and regional integration as outlined in the ECOWAS charter.
The Senate also commended the efforts of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their prompt and diplomatic handling of the situation.
Nigerians residing in Ghana are advised to remain law-abiding and avoid inciteful actions as diplomatic channels are being utilized to address the issue.
This incident underscores the importance of mutual respect and cooperation among African nations to foster unity and address shared challenges.
