In a significant policy shift, the United States Department of State has announced that, effective July 8, 2025, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens will be limited to single entry with a validity period of three months.
This change aligns with the U.S.'s reciprocal visa policy, reflecting the visa terms that American citizens receive when traveling to Nigeria. Previously, Nigerian applicants could obtain multiple-entry visas valid for up to two years.
The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria clarified that visas issued before the implementation date will retain their original validity and terms. However, all new applications will be subject to the updated restrictions.
The Department of State emphasized that visa reciprocity is an ongoing process, subject to periodic review and adjustments. These measures aim to uphold the integrity of the U.S. immigration system by ensuring secure travel documents, minimizing visa overstays, and enhancing public safety through information sharing.
Nigerian travelers are advised to adhere strictly to the terms of their visas and ensure that all travel documents are authentic and up to date. The U.S. government reiterated its commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria, particularly in areas of business, education, and cultural exchange.
This policy revision underscores the importance of reciprocal treatment in international travel agreements and highlights the dynamic nature of visa regulations based on diplomatic relations.
