Katsina Mosque Massacre: 50 Killed, 60 Abducted in Retaliatory Attack Amid Escalating Banditry in Nigeria’s Northwest

In a harrowing escalation of violence in Nigeria’s northwest, at least 50 individuals were killed and approximately 60 others abducted during a coordinated assault on the Unguwan Mantau community in Katsina State. The attack, which occurred during early morning prayers on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, has been described as one of the deadliest in the region's recent history.

🔥 Attack Details

According to local lawmaker Aminu Ibrahim, the assailants stormed the mosque during the dawn Fajr prayers, opening fire on worshippers and killing 30 individuals on the spot. Subsequently, the attackers moved through the village, setting homes ablaze and burning 20 residents alive. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen arrived on motorcycles, a common tactic among armed groups in the region. 

Katsina State Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu confirmed that the attackers also abducted around 60 residents, including women and children, before fleeing the scene. Several homes were destroyed, and the community remains in a state of shock and mourning.

Authorities suggest that the attack was a retaliatory act following a recent incident where local vigilantes ambushed and killed several bandits in the area. Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Mu’azu, indicated that the community's earlier resistance may have provoked the brutal response from the armed group.

In the aftermath, security forces have been deployed to Unguwan Mantau and surrounding areas to prevent further attacks. Acting Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe has appealed to the military for increased support to bolster local security efforts. President Bola Tinubu has condemned the attack and pledged to intensify the government's campaign against banditry and terrorism in the region.
