Meet Mayor Rasheed Ayinde (Merenge): The Ibadan Fuji Maestro Who Revolutionized the Sound of a Generation

✨ The Story of a Living Fuji Legend

Born on July 23, 1963, Mayor Rasheed Ayinde Adekunle, famously known as Merenge, stands as one of Nigeria’s most respected and influential Fuji musicians. A native son of Ibadan, Rasheed Ayinde has spent over four decades redefining Fuji music — transforming it from its raw, traditional form into a globally recognized, modernized sound. His genius lies in his ability to blend the rhythmic soul of Fuji with contemporary beats and danceable energy that appeal to both old-school lovers and the younger generation.

🎶 Early Life: From the Streets of Ibadan to the Stage

Rasheed Ayinde was born into the family of Late Alhaji and Alhaja Liadi Olalere of Ile Alaja, Ita Okoro, Isale Osi, Ibadan. From a very young age, his passion for music was undeniable. At just 13 years old, he began his journey into music through “Were” — a traditional Islamic music form performed during Ramadan to wake Muslims for early prayers. Alongside his twin brother, he would go around Ibadan neighborhoods serenading residents with soulful morning melodies.

He attended Progressive Day School, Aladorin, Isale Osi, Ibadan, the same school attended by His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Senator) Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa I), and was classmates with Senator Sarafadeen Abiodun. He later continued at Baptist Secondary School, Oke Ado, but financial challenges cut his education short — though not his dream.

Before fame, Rasheed Ayinde’s life was one of grit and hustle. He once worked as a “motor boy” alongside the late NURTW boss Alhaji Taofeek Oyerinde Fele, before finding his footing in the music scene.

🎤 The Rise: From Backup Singer to Band Leader

His professional music journey began when he joined the band of Late Ayinde Majester Apanpa in 1978 as a backup singer. This was where he honed his craft and mastered stage performance, vocal balance, and audience connection.

In 1980, after years of learning under Apanpa, Rasheed Ayinde courageously left the band to establish his own. His debut album “Owo” (Money) was released in 1983 under Alhaji Kamaldeen Oluyole Records, marking the official beginning of a phenomenal career. This was followed by “Owo 2 (Money Power)” in 1985 and another in 1986, each reflecting his growing mastery of Fuji’s evolving rhythm.

A pivotal moment came in 1983, when he met Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate) in Ibadan. Deeply inspired by Wasiu’s Talazo Fuji style, Rasheed Ayinde incorporated that energy into his music — setting the stage for his groundbreaking innovation.

🌍 The Birth of “Merenge Fuji”: A Musical Revolution

In the early 1990s, Rasheed Ayinde changed Fuji music forever with the creation of a new sub-genre he called “Merenge Fuji.” Drawing inspiration from both African percussions and European dance beats, he fused Fuji’s traditional essence with the lively, rhythmic bounce of the Caribbean merengue sound — giving birth to something completely new.

“Merenge Fuji” became a sensation. Its two-beat rhythm, hip-swaying dance moves, and upbeat tempo captured the hearts of music lovers across Nigeria and beyond. Rasheed Ayinde’s innovation not only influenced the sound of Fuji but also inspired an entire generation of artists to experiment beyond the boundaries of tradition.

✈️ Taking Fuji Global: The First Ibadan Fuji Artist to Perform Abroad

In 1988, Rasheed Ayinde achieved what no other Ibadan-based Fuji musician had done before — he embarked on his first international tour to France (Paris). That trip marked the start of his global legacy. Over the years, he has performed across Africa, Europe, Asia, the UK, and North America, proudly representing Ibadan and Nigerian culture on world stages.

His tours were more than just performances; they were cultural missions. Through his music, Merenge showcased the power of Fuji as an evolving art form capable of uniting generations, languages, and continents.

🏆 Legacy, Recognition & Cultural Impact

With over 40 albums to his name, Mayor Rasheed Ayinde stands as a towering figure in the Fuji industry. His music is a blend of wisdom, rhythm, and storytelling — appealing to both street listeners and intellectual audiences.

He is affectionately called “Ogo Ibadan” (The Glory of Ibadan), a title that symbolizes his deep roots and pride in his heritage. His artistry has earned him numerous chieftaincy titles, awards, and cultural recognitions, both in Nigeria and abroad. Beyond music, he is celebrated for his humility, integrity, and leadership, qualities that have made him a mentor to many younger Fuji musicians.

💫 Beyond the Stage

Rasheed Ayinde’s life story is one of resilience, faith, and purpose. Despite humble beginnings, he rose through sheer determination to become a symbol of Ibadan’s musical strength. He continues to inspire new artists to believe in originality and innovation, proving that success doesn’t come from imitation, but from finding your unique rhythm.

He is happily married and blessed with successful children who continue to uphold the family’s legacy of excellence and honor.

🎵 Conclusion: The Living Legend of Fuji

From the Were sounds of Isale Osi to international concert stages, Mayor Rasheed Ayinde (Merenge) has lived a life that embodies passion, innovation, and cultural pride. His journey reflects the very soul of Fuji — resilience through rhythm, and progress through passion.

Today, as Fuji music continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: there can never be another Merenge. His influence will forever echo in the drums of Ibadan, the streets of Lagos, and the hearts of Fuji lovers around the world.
