Abuja & Ibadan Null and Void: BoT Steps In as PDP’s Entire Leadership Script Gets Rewritten by the Courts

Supreme Court Sacks PDP Leadership: BoT Takes Over in Dramatic Power Shift Ahead of 2027 Elections

In a decisive and constitutionally backed move, the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally assumed national leadership of the party following a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The announcement, made on Thursday, April 30, 2026, underscores the BoT’s intervention to prevent a leadership vacuum after the apex court invalidated key structures within the party. Acting under the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), the BoT described its takeover as a necessary and urgent step to stabilize the party and restore order.

Supreme Court Nullifies PDP Convention and Leadership

In a judgment that has sent shockwaves across Nigeria’s political landscape, the Supreme Court nullified the PDP’s National Convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan. That convention had produced a National Working Committee (NWC) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki.

Beyond the convention’s invalidation, the court also upheld the suspension of key party officials, including Senator Samuel Anyanwu (National Secretary), Hon. Umar Bature (National Organizing Secretary), and Barr. Kamaldeen Ajibade (National Legal Adviser). The unanimous ruling by a five-member panel effectively dismantled the party’s existing leadership framework.

All Actions Declared Null and Void

The implications of the judgment are far-reaching. According to the BoT, all decisions and actions taken by the affected officials—including the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, the formation of a National Caretaker Committee, and the conduct of the March 29, 2026 convention in Abuja—have been declared illegal, null, and void from the outset.

This dual invalidation of both the Turaki-led and Abdulrahman Mohammed-led leadership structures has left the PDP without a valid National Working Committee, triggering the BoT’s constitutional intervention.

BoT Steps In as Stabilizing Force

Citing Section 32(5) of the PDP Constitution, which empowers it as the second-highest organ of the party, the BoT has now assumed full responsibility for national leadership. The move is positioned as a remedial measure aimed at fostering reconciliation, restoring internal democracy, and repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The BoT emphasized that its leadership is temporary but critical, focused on salvaging the party from internal crises and ensuring compliance with Nigeria’s evolving electoral framework, including the Electoral Act, 2026.

Emergency NEC Meeting and Interim Leadership Plans

As part of its immediate action plan, the BoT has announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC). This meeting will, among other key decisions, appoint an Interim National Working Committee to manage the party’s affairs and oversee operations at the National Secretariat.

The interim leadership will be tasked with meeting all statutory electoral timelines and positioning the PDP to field credible candidates and compete effectively in the 2027 elections.

Directive to Party Staff and Call for Unity

All PDP staff have been directed to resume duties at the party’s National Secretariat under the supervision of the BoT, pending the constitution of the interim leadership.

The BoT also acknowledged the resilience and commitment of party stakeholders, including state governors such as Bala Mohammed and Seyi Makinde, members of the National Assembly caucus, state chairmen, and the party’s youth and women wings.

A Call for Reconciliation and Sacrifice

In a strongly worded appeal, the BoT urged all party leaders and members to set aside personal ambitions and factional interests in favor of unity and collective progress. It stressed that the PDP’s internal crisis has had broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic landscape and the millions of citizens who look to the party for leadership.

“The PDP has suffered enough,” the statement noted, calling for genuine reconciliation, sacrifice, and a renewed commitment to democratic ideals.

Looking Ahead

With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections on the horizon, the PDP faces a critical rebuilding phase. The BoT’s intervention marks a turning point that could either restore the party’s credibility or deepen its internal divisions, depending on how effectively reconciliation and reforms are implemented.

For now, the focus remains on stabilizing the party, rebuilding trust, and charting a new course that aligns with the expectations of Nigerians.
