Oyo PDP Aspirants Are Smiling at the Table, But Everyone Knows Makinde Has a Favourite

In Nigerian politics, noise is often mistaken for strategy. Many politicians believe that the loudest voice in the room automatically controls the game. But in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde continues to prove that calmness should never be confused with weakness or political inexperience.

For years, critics and opponents have underestimated Makinde because of his gentlemanly approach to governance and politics. Yet, political developments within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 governorship election suggest that the governor is several steps ahead of many observers.

Across Oyo political circles, one name has consistently dominated conversations surrounding Makinde’s possible successor — Abimbola Adekanmbi, popularly known as Bimadek. Although the governor has not made any official public declaration endorsing a candidate, insiders within the PDP have repeatedly linked Adekanmbi to the governor’s long-term succession calculations. Recent reports have also indicated that the party leadership has been engaging in extensive consultations and screening processes involving aspirants ahead of the next election cycle.

What many people fail to understand is that politics at this level is not always played publicly. Sometimes, the real negotiations happen behind closed doors, away from cameras and social media headlines. That appears to be exactly what is currently happening within the Oyo PDP.

The gathering of top party leaders and aspirants recently was more than just a social event. It was a strategic political meeting designed to strengthen unity within the ruling party and prevent future internal crises. While outsiders may see politicians eating, smiling, and taking photographs together, insiders understand that such meetings are often platforms for serious reconciliation, negotiation, and power balancing.

Those familiar with Oyo politics know that succession battles can easily divide parties if not properly managed. Governor Makinde appears determined to avoid such a scenario by ensuring that aggrieved aspirants, influential stakeholders, and party leaders remain carried along in the process.

Interestingly, the positioning at the gathering also spoke volumes politically. Bimadek was seen seated close to the deputy governor — a symbolic arrangement many political observers interpreted as a subtle signal about his growing influence within the party structure.

Also present were several powerful PDP figures and governorship hopefuls, including Adedeji Stanley Olajide, widely known as ODIDI OMO; Saheed Akinade-Fijabi; and Adebo Ogundoyin — all prominent political figures who have either openly shown interest or have been strongly linked with ambitions to succeed Makinde. Reports have also confirmed that multiple aspirants have already been screened and engaged by committees set up within the PDP structure to assess their visions and electability ahead of 2027.

Political analysts believe Makinde’s current strategy is centered on maintaining party stability while quietly building consensus around a preferred successor. This approach mirrors the style of many experienced political leaders who understand that imposing candidates without adequate consultation often leads to rebellion, defections, and electoral defeat.

The governor’s influence within Oyo politics has grown significantly since his emergence in 2019. Even political discussions online frequently reference his growing stature within national opposition politics and his reputation for strategic leadership in the South-West.

While opposition parties continue to watch developments closely, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the battle for Oyo 2027 may not simply be about who wants power the most. It may ultimately depend on who has the confidence and political backing of Governor Seyi Makinde and the broader PDP structure.

For now, Makinde remains publicly calm and diplomatic. But beneath that calm exterior, the political calculations are already unfolding quietly, strategically, and methodically.

And if recent developments are anything to go by, the governor may already know exactly where the pendulum will swing when the time finally comes.
