PDP Finally Admits ‘We Created Wike’ — Party Apologises to Nigerians as Internal War Explodes

The deepening crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken another dramatic turn after a powerful faction within the party publicly expressed regret over helping to elevate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to national political prominence.

In what many political observers now describe as one of the strongest public condemnations ever directed at Wike by members of his former political family, the PDP faction openly apologised to Nigerians, admitting that the party’s support and platform contributed significantly to his rise in Nigerian politics.

The statement, reportedly backed by allies of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, accused Wike of turning against the same political structure that built his career while allegedly working in alignment with interests linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the PDP faction, if the party had not previously supported Wike’s emergence as local government chairman, minister, governor, and eventually a major national political figure, Nigerians may have been spared what it described as political embarrassment and internal destabilisation.

The controversy followed Wike’s recent media appearance, where he reportedly made strong remarks against some PDP leaders and ongoing activities within the party. In response, the PDP described the minister’s comments as reckless, provocative, and damaging to the image of the opposition party.

The statement signed by PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong reportedly accused the FCT minister of displaying “political rascality” and using public platforms to attack respected Nigerians without restraint. The party also dismissed claims suggesting Wike holds any form of supreme leadership position within the PDP, insisting that no office of “National Leader” exists in the party’s constitution.

For many Nigerians, the public fallout marks another dangerous stage in the long-running political battle between Wike and sections of the PDP leadership following the 2023 general elections.

Wike, who previously served as Governor of Rivers State and played a major role in PDP power politics for years, became one of the most influential figures within the opposition party before his relationship with the leadership deteriorated after internal disputes surrounding the party’s presidential ticket and power-sharing arrangements.

His eventual appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu further intensified accusations from critics who believe he has become politically aligned with the APC despite remaining connected to PDP structures.

Political analysts say the latest confrontation reveals how deeply divided the PDP has become ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

What makes the situation even more significant is the fact that Wike was once considered one of the strongest pillars of the PDP. He chaired major party committees, financed political operations, influenced national conventions, and played key roles in internal party negotiations for years.

However, the relationship between Wike and several PDP stakeholders has gradually collapsed amid allegations of betrayal, power struggles, and attempts to control the direction of the opposition party.

The Rivers political crisis involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was once widely viewed as Wike’s political protégé, has also added to perceptions that the former Rivers governor remains locked in multiple political battles simultaneously.

Across Nigeria’s political landscape, reactions to the PDP’s apology have been mixed. While some Nigerians believe the party is finally admitting its mistakes, others argue that the PDP itself helped normalize aggressive political godfatherism and internal power intimidation long before the current crisis escalated.

Some political commentators also believe the statement reflects growing frustration within the opposition camp as Wike continues to maintain influence both inside government circles and within sections of the PDP structure.

Despite the criticism, Wike remains one of the most powerful and controversial political figures in Nigeria today. Supporters still credit him for major infrastructure projects during his time as Rivers governor and for his ability to dominate political negotiations with unmatched confidence.

But as tensions continue to rise publicly between the PDP and one of its former strongest allies, many Nigerians now believe the opposition party is entering one of the most defining internal battles in its history.

And with 2027 political calculations already quietly taking shape, the war between Wike and the PDP may be far from over.
