Politics vs Tradition: Adelabu Fires Back at ‘Disrespect’ Rumours, Defends Lifelong Bond with Olubadan
Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the immediate past Minister of Power and a leading governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, has firmly dismissed allegations claiming he disrespected the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, during a recent political engagement in Ibadan South East Local Government Area.
In a strongly worded response, Adelabu described the circulating claims as “false, mischievous, and politically motivated,” accusing detractors of deliberately twisting facts to incite tension and tarnish his image. According to him, the narrative being pushed does not reflect the reality of his remarks or his longstanding personal and familial relationship with the revered monarch.
Clarifying the events in question, Adelabu explained that his speech at the gathering was purely historical and political in context. He noted that he merely referenced past political developments in Oyo State, particularly moments when progressive forces lost power. He stressed that at no point did he insult or undermine the Olubadan institution, widely regarded as one of the most respected traditional stools in Yorubaland.
“I can never disrespect the Olubadan stool because of politics. Politics is temporary, but the institution of the Olubadan is sacred and deeply rooted in our cultural heritage,” Adelabu stated, reinforcing his position.
The former minister further clarified that any chants or reactions from members of the audience during the event were spontaneous and not orchestrated or encouraged by him. Political rallies in Nigeria, especially in high-stakes environments like Oyo State, are often marked by emotionally charged responses from supporters, a factor he urged observers to consider before drawing conclusions.
Beyond politics, Adelabu emphasized the deeply personal nature of his relationship with Oba Ladoja, describing the monarch as a father figure, mentor, and respected elder. He maintained that their bond transcends political affiliations and has remained intact despite differences in political alignment over the years.
“Oba Ladoja is like a father to me. No political disagreement can destroy that bond. Our relationship has always been built on mutual respect,” he said.
To further counter the allegations, Adelabu revealed that he had visited the Olubadan at his palace less than two weeks prior to the controversy. According to him, the meeting was cordial and reflective of the enduring respect between both men, underscoring that there is no animosity between them.
The governorship hopeful also highlighted the historical ties between his family and that of the Olubadan. He recalled the legacy of his grandfather, Adegoke Adelabu, popularly known as “Penkelemesi,” a prominent nationalist and political figure in Nigeria’s pre-independence era. Adelabu noted that his grandfather shared a close alliance and friendship with the Ladoja family, a relationship that has spanned generations.
“This bond is not just political; it is historical and familial. Our families have shared deep connections for decades, making it inconceivable for me to disrespect the Olubadan stool or the Ladoja family,” he explained.
As the Agbaakin Parakoyi of Ibadanland, a respected traditional title, Adelabu reiterated his commitment to preserving the dignity and sanctity of Ibadan’s traditional institutions. He described himself as a proud son of Ibadanland who remains loyal to its customs, values, and leadership structures.
Observers note that traditional institutions like the Olubadan throne play a critical role in maintaining cultural identity and social cohesion in Oyo State. Political actors are often expected to show utmost respect to such institutions, regardless of party differences, a standard Adelabu insists he has consistently upheld.
In his concluding remarks, Adelabu urged political stakeholders and members of the public to refrain from dragging traditional rulers into partisan conflicts. He warned that such actions could erode the unity and respect that underpin Ibadan’s cultural heritage.
“Political ambition should never come at the expense of our traditional institutions. I remain a loyal son of Ibadanland, respectful to the Olubadan, and committed to protecting our royal heritage,” he concluded.
The statement, issued by his media aide, underscores Adelabu’s attempt to set the record straight amid rising political tensions ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race in Oyo State, where narratives and counter-narratives are increasingly shaping public perception.
