“We’re Blind to Party Colour” — Makinde’s Statement May Have Changed Oyo 2027 Politics Completely

Oyo 2027: Makinde Defends Bimbo Adekanmbi Amid Growing Debate Over Successor Politics

Fresh political conversations have continued to dominate the atmosphere in Oyo State following comments by Seyi Makinde regarding the growing controversy surrounding the emergence of Bimbo Adekanmbi as a possible successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The governor, while addressing critics questioning the political background and party affiliation of Adekanmbi, made it clear that competence and the future development of Oyo State remain more important than political party coloration. Makinde stated that his administration is focused on capacity, leadership ability, and continuity of progress rather than political sentiment.

According to the governor, “We are blind to party coloration; we are open to capacity that can move Oyo State forward.” The statement has since generated widespread reactions across political circles, especially within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress.

The debate intensified because Bimbo Adekanmbi is widely known as a former commissioner under the administration of late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who governed the state under the APC platform. Over the years, Adekanmbi built a reputation as a technocrat and financial expert during his time in government, particularly while serving as Commissioner for Finance and later Deputy Chief of Staff.

Political observers say Makinde’s recent remarks appear to signal a governance-first approach rather than a strictly partisan calculation. Analysts also believe the governor may be attempting to position competence and administrative experience above party loyalty as discussions surrounding his possible successor continue to gather momentum.

The controversy surrounding Adekanmbi’s name gained traction after multiple reports suggested that Makinde and key political allies were considering him as a preferred governorship successor ahead of 2027. Although the governor’s media aides have repeatedly stated that no official endorsement has yet been announced, political discussions around Adekanmbi’s growing closeness to the governor continue to dominate conversations in Oyo political circles.

Adekanmbi’s influence within the current administration reportedly increased significantly after he was appointed to oversee strategic development initiatives, including the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport project, one of the flagship infrastructure programs under the Makinde administration. Many analysts view this appointment as a major signal of trust and political alignment between the governor and the former finance commissioner.

Within the PDP, reactions have remained mixed. While some party loyalists believe the governor should have complete freedom to support anyone he considers capable of sustaining the state’s developmental agenda, others argue that long-standing party members who have remained loyal over the years should not be overlooked for an outsider with APC roots.

Opposition parties and political commentators have also continued to weigh in on the matter, with many describing Makinde’s comments as a bold and strategic political statement capable of reshaping alignments ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

Supporters of the governor insist that governance should be driven by competence, vision, and administrative capacity rather than political history alone. They argue that Oyo State’s future requires experienced individuals who can sustain ongoing infrastructure development, economic reforms, and institutional projects beyond the current administration.

However, critics believe the unfolding succession conversation could trigger tension within the PDP if consultations and internal negotiations are not carefully managed before the party eventually settles for a governorship candidate.

Despite the growing controversy, one thing remains clear: the battle for who succeeds Governor Seyi Makinde has officially become one of the biggest political conversations in Oyo State.

As consultations, alliances, and behind-the-scenes negotiations continue, political stakeholders across party lines are closely watching every move from the governor’s camp.

For now, Makinde’s message appears straightforward — party affiliation may matter less to him than competence, loyalty to Oyo State, and the ability to sustain the progress achieved under his administration.
