Adekanmbi Challenges 2027 Aspirants to a Live Debate, Says Oyo Deserves Continuity Built on Ideas, Not Rallies
As preparations gradually gather momentum for the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Bimbo Adekanmbi, has called for what many observers describe as a new standard of issue-based political engagement.
According to Adekanmbi, the people of Oyo State deserve continuity in governance while embracing a political culture that prioritizes competence, accountability, and practical solutions over campaign slogans. His position aligns with his broader commitment to sustaining and improving on the development agenda popularly known as Omituntun 3.0, which seeks to build on the achievements of the current administration.
Speaking on the need for informed leadership, Adekanmbi proposed that every major governorship candidate seeking the mandate of Oyo voters should participate in a live televised debate before the 2027 election.
He stated:
"Oyo State deserves continuity and something we have never had before. Before anyone asks for our votes in 2027, let's have a LIVE televised debate on the economy, education, security, healthcare, agriculture and jobs. No scripts. No crowd. Just ideas. Will every candidate agree?"
The proposal is being viewed as a call for issue-driven politics where candidates publicly present their visions and policy priorities directly to the electorate without rehearsed speeches or partisan distractions.
A live debate, according to political analysts, would provide Oyo residents with an opportunity to compare candidates based on their understanding of the state's challenges and the practicality of their proposed solutions. Critical sectors such as economic growth, education, healthcare delivery, security, agriculture, youth empowerment, and job creation remain central to the development aspirations of the state and are expected to dominate discussions ahead of the election.
The call also reflects a growing demand among Nigerians for greater transparency and accountability from political office seekers. Across the country, civil society organisations and election observers have repeatedly encouraged candidates to engage in public debates, allowing voters to assess their competence, leadership qualities, and policy direction before casting their ballots.
Adekanmbi has consistently maintained that continuity should not simply mean preserving existing policies but improving governance by consolidating developmental gains while introducing fresh ideas that address emerging challenges. Since emerging as the APM governorship candidate, he has pledged to sustain the developmental strides associated with the Omituntun agenda while charting a path that delivers even greater opportunities for the people of Oyo State.
His latest challenge now raises an important question ahead of the 2027 governorship race: Will every candidate be willing to defend their plans before the people in an open, unscripted, and nationally televised debate?
If embraced by all contenders, such a debate could mark a significant shift in Oyo State's political landscape, placing policies, performance, and vision above political rhetoric and campaign theatrics.
As conversations around the 2027 election continue to evolve, many voters will be watching closely to see whether political aspirants accept the invitation to engage in a transparent contest of ideas.
