PFIPC Saga Takes International Turn as U.S. Lobbying Firm Offers Whistleblower Support to Adeniyi Adeyemi
The controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) has taken an international dimension following an announcement by a Washington-based lobbying and strategic advisory firm expressing its willingness to assist Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the man at the centre of the unfolding scandal, in seeking asylum and whistleblower protection in the United States.
The development comes amid the ongoing political and legal dispute involving Adeyemi, who has maintained that he was legitimately appointed as Director-General of the PFIPC. The Presidency, however, has consistently rejected those claims, insisting that the PFIPC is a fictitious organisation and that Adeyemi is facing criminal charges relating to alleged forgery, impersonation and obtaining by false pretence. The matter is currently before a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement published on X, the Washington-based firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., led by political strategist and international affairs commentator Dr. Karl Von Batten, announced that it was prepared to represent Adeyemi should he seek protection in the United States.
According to the statement, the firm said it was interested in speaking directly with Adeyemi and was willing to assist him in pursuing asylum and whistleblower protection if he possesses credible evidence relating to alleged public corruption.
The firm further argued that the matter could extend beyond Nigeria's domestic political landscape because Nigeria receives funding from international development institutions, including the World Bank, in which the United States is the largest shareholder. It contended that if any credible allegations involve funds linked to multilateral financial institutions, such claims could attract the attention of relevant U.S. authorities responsible for safeguarding international development resources.
The statement also contained a warning directed at the Nigerian government, declaring that if any harm were to come to Adeyemi, the firm would advocate for an international investigation and for those found responsible to be held accountable.
While the intervention represents one of the strongest international reactions to the PFIPC controversy so far, the U.S. firm's comments do not constitute evidence that Adeyemi's allegations are true. Rather, they emphasise the importance of protecting individuals who claim to possess evidence of public corruption and ensuring that any allegations are investigated through lawful and transparent processes.
The controversy has generated significant political debate in Nigeria. Opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have repeatedly called for an independent investigation into the matter, arguing that only a transparent inquiry can establish the full facts surrounding the disputed council and the circumstances that allowed it to operate.
The Tinubu administration has maintained that it acted promptly after discovering the alleged irregularities. The Presidency has stated that the Office of the Chief of Staff was among the first to alert security agencies about the suspected forgery and impersonation, leading to police investigations and criminal charges against Adeyemi and two others. President Bola Tinubu has also directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to conduct a comprehensive investigation into all matters connected with the PFIPC.
Government officials have repeatedly denied allegations of official complicity. Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila has publicly distanced himself from Adeyemi's claims and has threatened legal action over what he describes as defamatory allegations. The Presidency has also issued multiple public disclaimers stating that no such government agency as the PFIPC exists under the current administration.
Nevertheless, the controversy continues to attract national and international attention because of questions surrounding how the disputed organisation allegedly obtained budgetary allocations, office space and official documentation before it was disowned by the Federal Government. Those issues have intensified public demands for greater transparency and accountability as investigations and court proceedings continue.
With the involvement of an American lobbying firm and growing international interest in the case, the PFIPC saga has evolved beyond a domestic political controversy into a matter attracting wider scrutiny. Whether the allegations ultimately lead to further legal or international action will depend on the evidence presented through ongoing judicial proceedings and official investigations.
